Murphy Must Go

I never cease to be amazed by the arrogance of elected officials. When caught with their hand in the cookie jar, they do everything they can to hang onto that elected office. It’s as if the world might come to a complete stop if they aren’t there to oversee things. And such is the case with Burbank Councilwoman Stacey Murphy.
Not withstanding her legal problems, Murphy says she intends to serve out the term that the voters elected her to. Has she lost all touch with reality? Maybe she is still high on that cocaine they found in her bedroom. It’s time she came down from the lofty heights of her City Hall office and faced the reality that she has broken the public’s trust. The actual charges against her are serious, cocaine possession and child endangerment. What bothers me, and should bother every law-abiding citizen in this community, is that she has been consorting with members of the street gang responsible for the killing of two police officers.
No doubt she will try to put the blame on her boyfriend, but let’s face it, Stacey Murphy is no babe in the woods. She is smart enough to know what’s going on --- even if she is stupid enough to be involved in this sordid mess. Her ex-husband has already mentioned that she is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. And if she were just any other private citizen, that would be true. But Stacey Murphy isn’t just any other private citizen. She is a public official, someone who has sworn an oath to uphold the laws of our community. To judge her so harshly is not a double standard, but merely holding her to a higher standard.
Indirectly, she has blood on her hands. For that reason alone, she is not fit to serve. But from a more practical point of view, defending herself from these charges is going to take all of her time and energy. It is not proper that the tax payers should keep paying her salary while her case takes months, possibly years, to get through the court system. And even if she should be found not guilty of the crimes she is charged with, her credibility and her effectiveness as a council member are non-existent. Stacey Murphy should do the right thing and resign immediately.
